The
first muslim Lord Major in Leicester, England has been sworn. The ceremony held
on Thursday (5/17) at The Town Hall.
In
an inauguration , Abdul Osman was officially becomes a Lord Major in Leicester.
He was sworn in front of the members of Leicester
City Council. Previously, Abdul Osman was joining the council since 1966, and
he takes over from Robb Wann.
“It's an
important year, with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, so it's a privilege
for me to hold office with everything that's going on.” Abdul Osman said.
"I want to
focus on visiting the communities and raising the profile of the office of Lord
Mayor,” he added.
Osman was born in
Kenya then arrived in the UK in 1971 .
He
declared that he will keep the promises properly. Aside from to developing the
city, he will make a good connection with the citizens.
Abdul Osman is the first Muslim who hold the
authority of Lord Major in Leicester.
He also said, "I'm
proud to be the first Muslim councilor to hold the position – we've had
Christian, Hindu, Sikh and now I'm able to bring the Islamic faith to the
office which is a great honor."
